With a slot head, you will wind the string so that you wrap the string for at least one rotation to the left of the tuner hole and then at least one rotation to the right of the tuner hole (as opposed to wrapping the string at least one rotation under the string and at least one rotation over the string on non-slotted guitars).

This Martin guitar has nice wide slots and is easy to string. I love slotted headstocks (currently have 4 ukes with slot heads), but I think the only thing they do for the ukulele is make it look cool (assuming you actually find them cool looking, of course).
